Ancient path from Falset to Gratallops

Camí antic de Falset a Gratallops
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Level: 250 m
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Duration: 2 h 30 m
PLEASE NOTE: Due to heavy rainfall, the crossing of the Siurana river on this route may be dangerous. We are currently working to build a wooden walkway.

"El Camí Antic de Falset a Gratallops" or the ancient path from Falset to Gratallops is one of the paths which has recently been cleared and signed by the Priorat County Council within the path network which it has created thanks to the 3 year grant for developing tourism in the region.

We leave the "Portal dels Ferrers" or Blacksmith's Gateway in and follow signs to the (Grande Route) Gr-174 towards Bellmunt. This path leads off the road to Gratallops on the left hand side as you leave Falset. There is a new signpost (WP1) which indicates "Camí antic de Gratallops". The route follows the Gr-174 (mostly on metalled road) towards the cemetery (WP4). At the cemetery turn right, again following the Gr-174. The track leads gently downwards through hazel groves. It crosses the Foïna dry river bed and then straight afterwards at a crossroads we turn right on a concreted track (WP5). Keep left as a track leads off to the right until we come to another turning point (WP6). The track to the left heads towards "Coll del Molí" and Bellmunt (GR 174). We take the right track just before a country farmhouse (ruin) called " Mas d’en Just". At this point and following the signs, (wooden posts with green signs and also yellow painted markings) we climb upwards towards the hills of the Obagues (WP7). We come to the ancient path which leads us downwards towards "Mas del Martinet". We are in a wooded area of holm oaks with some lovely vineyard views. The ground is soft and covered with moss, ferns and lichen where we can still see the old dry stone walls ("marges") which used to mark the sides of the old path. We continue downhill until we reach the winery of "Mas del Martinet"(WP9).

The Siurana river must be crossed at Mas del Martinet and until a wooden walkway has been built, walkers must cross the water barefoot. It is worth noting that there is only water after heavy rainfall. It is not advisable to try to cross if the water is fast-flowing. On the other side of the river, there is a path taking you through high reeds where you cross the river bed again (WP 10).  On the other side, the path starts  an steep uphill climb, yet remains wide with pretty dry stone walls. Despite the steepness, the path is fairly easy to follow. The glorious views of Mas Martinet vineyards are soon replaced by views towards the hilltop village of Bellmunt del Priorat and further on, we come to the amphitheatres of the spectacular vineyards of Gratallops. The mule has returned to Alvaro Palacios vineyards and we can sometimes see it ploughing in-between the rows of vines.

The path joins a much wider one soon (WP11) and a little later reaches the top of the hill. We are now surrounded by vineyards and wonderful views. The area is very regimented yet at the same time ondulating according to the lay of the land. There are also almonds and olive trees which add to the sumptuous scenery. We continue walking on the wide farm track along the ridge. We reach a flat area for parking farm machinery and we turn leftwards along the path of  the "Molins d’en Borràs" (WP12), and a little while later, the path which leads to Bellmunt (WP13).

We soon come to a gentle hill and a deviation near to a little stone house (WP14). We continue right to reach the top of the hill where the beautiful views over Clos Mogador's vineyards open up before us (WP15). The path starts a gentle downhill and a little later leaves the main track to continue in a straight line (WP16). the village of Gratallops appears before us. As in many Priorat villages, the church bell tower dominates the skyline. Once we start on the downhill, we leave the farm track and come across the ancient path again (WP17) which winds downwards towards another farm track (WP18). We come to the main road (WP19) which we cross and enter the village of Gratallops along "Era" street (WP20).

A 20 d`abril, he fet Falset Gratallops - Gratallops Bellmunt i Bellmunt Falset, pels camins que heu recuperat. Molt nets i cuidats.
