La Serra de Llaberia

More than mere mountains, the Llaberia and Colldejou mountain ranges are fortresses; castles constricted by their steep cliffs, walls of limestone rock which the evening light paints the colour of honey. They spread out beyond the Priorat boundaries into the Baix Camp and Ribera d’Ebre regions.

One figure in particular stands out in Catalan history during the eighteenth century. Born in Capçanes with close links to the nearby Llaberia mountains, his name was Pere Joan Barceló, better known as El Carrasclet. He was a man who was deeply committed to his country, a man who stood up to the powerful Philip V once the War of Succession had ended. The mountains still guard the memory of his noble activities and the courage of his men.

The holm oaks that flourish on the slopes of the Mola de Colldejou were farmed intensively to produce charcoal whilst the pastures further up were treasured by local shepherds. The characteristic outline of this mountain makes up the unmistakable landscape of the Priorat and the Tarragona province.
