Mas de Sant Antoni (Saint Anthony's Farmhouse)

"Mas de Sant Antoni" is to be found at the foothills of the Montsant mountain range near the village of La Morera de Montsant. You can get here by passing the Carthusian Monastery of Escaladei on a dirt track heading towards the mountain range. On the way, you will pass a building known as "La Pietat" which once belonged to the monastery and was used for monks who needed rest.

This old farmhouse was originally a former chapel and belonged to the village of Montalt, now disappeared. According to local legend, due to its proximity to the Carthusian monastery, it appears the monks, shortly after arriving here, paid the inhabitants of Montalt to abandon their village in favour of more distant land and even paid for the daughters of the village's weddings.  HIstorically however, it has been proven that the village was abandoned at the beginning of the 15th century. In later years, the farmhouse was legally recognised as property of the monks of Escaladei. The old chapel is still visible and close-by there is a water tank which is fed by a natural spring dedicated to Saint Anthony.
